Australia vs England on December 2

The second of Ashes series will begin tomorrow, the 2nd of December with the home nation firmly in the driver’s seat to regain the world most famous trophy. Australia completed a 10 wicket win just 5 days ago and will have their eyes set on the same result again. Adelaide has been a pleasant home for the Australian cricket team in recent years, losing just once since 2003. England will take some solace knowing that they were the ones to inflict this defeat in 2010. The Adelaide test will be the first ever Day/Night Ashes test, and with that brings a fresh challenge, The Pink Ball.

·         Best economical pick – Making his debut in the Ashes, Cameron Bancroft would have hoped for a better start. He misfired in the first innings, edging Stuart Broad behind after only making five, but showed his potential second time around to score an impressive half-century and set up the emphatic win.

·         Top captains & vice captains – The cricketing world is beginning to run out of superlatives to describe Steve Smith. The best Batsman in the world has an imposing record in day/night test matches. In his 6 innings, he has posted scores of 130, 63, 59, 40, 53 and 14. Believe it or not, this is actually worse than his record in other test matches of late. In the first innings David Warner ended up cheaply losing his wicket, whipping an innocuous delivery from Jake Ball straight into the hands of mid-wicket. However, the swashbuckling left-hander made amends in the second innings with a destructive fifty in the evening session of day four to pave the course for an Ashes lead.

·       Smart pick – Much has been made about Mitchell Starc’s Pink ball prowess and rightly so, In the 5 innings he has bowled in at test level he has taken 16 wickets at 22.75, and his first-class record is even better. His pace and swing seem to suit the pink ball better than any other bowler in world cricket.

·         Cautious Pick – Alastair Cook looked fidgety and seemed to hit balls he didn’t have to. Unfortunately, this had him dismissed cheaply in both innings. If England are to have any chance in the 2nd test Cook will need to find some form and score big.

My XI – Steve Smith (Captain), David Warner (Vice-Captain),Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Jonny Bairstow, Cameron Bancroft, Stuart Broad, Chris Woakes, Patrick Cummins, James Vince, Shaun Marsh
