England vs Australia on September 12

The final test match of Ashes 2019 is about to get underway and England has only pride to play for. England is trailing by 2-1 in the series and that means that Australia has retained the Ashes. A win here for England would help it equalize the series but not regain the Ashes. It is the first time in 18 years that Australia will return from England with the Ashes urn in their kit and the English public has not taken that kindly. Can England lift itself up under such testing mental circumstances? The selectors have decided to stick to the same squad as that for the previous test match so no new faces are likely to be seen either. Australia, on the other hand, would know that another test match victory will help it re-establish dominance over England for a long time to come. England’s test match team seems to be suffering from some deep-rooted faults that need to be addressed. The Australian team has been extremely professional in its approach to the Ashes. Having a player like Steve Smith in the side is going to be an advantage for any side but that still should not take away the brilliance of the Australian bowling attack.

Best economical pick – Marnus Labuschagne has impressed everybody with his temperament. Even when he was hit with fierce bouncers on his head he carried on his batting with great composure. Marnus Labuschagne has been a find for the Australian team in this Ashes. The youngster has all the attributes to become a batting mainstay for the Kangaroos.

Top captains & vice captains – To stand any chance of levelling the series, England will have to find a way to stop Steven Smith, who has scored 671 runs in just five innings. The former Australian captain, top of the international Test rankings, has carried his team's batting with three centuries and two fifties, including a double-century. Smith has made his mountain of runs despite missing three innings after he was felled by a Jofra Archer bouncer. The other key factor for Australia has been the strength of their pace attack, with Josh Hazlewood and world number one Pat Cummins catching the eye with 42 wickets between them.

Smart pick – Summer of 2019 will be recalled as Ben Stokes' summer. The English all-rounder has helped England lift the World Cup and record a stunning victory in the fourth Ashes Test. Barring Stokes' the English squad has looked ordinary. England will again look towards the 28-year-old to help them save them from the embarrassment of a series loss.

Cautions Pick – Jason Roy has had a particularly humiliating fall from grace in this Ashes series, beginning as an opener and then dropping down to No.4. It did not help his cause as Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, with their dexterous line and length, showed precisely why Tests are called just that. He has an average of 13.75 in the Ashes right now and may even be dropped for the final Test if Ben Stokes cannot bowl and England need a bowling allrounder to maintain team balance.

My XI – Steve Smith (Captain), Pat Cummins (Vice-Captain), Ben Stokes, Josh Hazlewood, Stuart Broad, Marnus Labuschagne, Rory Burns, Joe Denly, Joe Root, Tim Paine, Travis Head
