Chennai vs Kolkata on October 15

The climax of the 14th edition of the Indian T20 League is finally here. Chennai defeated Delhi in the first qualifier and made it to the final. They were brilliant with the bat even as their skipper MS Dhoni finally clicking at the crucial juncture for his team. However, they came into the first qualifier on the back of a hat trick of losses and they will be aware of the shortcomings which can come back to haunt them in the title-clash. Kolkata, on the other hand, have survived sensational batting collapses in the eliminator and second qualifier to make it to the final. They have the momentum with them in the UAE leg of the league having won seven of their nine games. However, they will have to wary of their own middle-order as Chennai will pounce on any chance they provide in the final.

Best economical pick Varun Chakravarthy has been excellent for KKR, especially in the UAE leg of IPL 2021. The off-spinner is currently the leading wicket-taker for the Knights, having taken 18 wickets at an economy rate of 6.40. The tweaker has been tough to get away on the slow and low wickets in the UAE. In the previous game, he picked up two wickets and looked in great rhythm.

Top captains & vice captains – Although Ruturaj Gaikwad ended IPL 2020 handsomely with three fifties after CSK had already been eliminated, a new season in different conditions presented a whole new challenge. The Maharashtra man aced it, scoring upwards of 500 runs in the group stages including a century against the Rajasthan Royals. Venkatesh Iyer has been a fantastic prospect for the Knights in the 2021 edition of the IPL. The left-hander has looked in ominous touch, having scored 320 runs at an average of 40 and a strike rate of 125. The southpaw has scored three half-centuries and must be high on confidence. In the Qualifier 2, Iyer scored a magnificent fifty and saw KKR over the finishing line.

Smart pick – If it was Shane Watson in 2018 final, Faf du Plessis has to be the man for Chennai in the 2021 final. Experience always plays a key role and the former South African skipper is expected to step up like he has done right through the season. He has so far 547 runs in 15 match this season at an average of more than 42 and a strike-rate of 137.09.

Cautious Pick – Eoin Morgan has been totally out of form in this tournament so far. He hasn’t been quite good with the bat and has struggled right through this year with the bat. The slowness of the surfaces in the UAE has also not helped his cause. Despite being a great leader of this unit, it has been difficult for him to add more value to the side with his bat. He is coming into this game with a duck on his back as well. On top of that, it should also be noted that he has 129 runs in 16 matches this season.

My XI – Ruturaj Gaikwad (Captain), Venkatesh Iyer (Vice-Captain), Faf du Plessis, Shubman Gill, Varun Chakravarthy, Rahul Tripathi, Lockie Ferguson, Josh Hazlewood, MS Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja, Sunil Narine
