South Africa vs Sri Lanka on February 21

South Africa and Sri Lanka played one of the most exciting games of Test cricket in their first match at Kingsmead, Durban. Needing 304 to win, Sri Lanka, who have been struggling off late, rallied on valiantly to cross the finish line by just one wicket. Sri Lanka started off strongly with the ball as they bowled out South Africa for just 235 to put pressure, but it was the fourth innings knock by Kushal Perera at the very end which made all the difference in what was a very entertaining game of Cricket. South Africa will definitely fight back, but only time will tell if the Lankans will be able to fight off the Proteas charge. Even though the first Test match had a winner, both teams will be fairly proud of the cricket that they played during the five days. South Africa will feel that they were undone by the top order in both the innings. But it is unlikely that the Proteas will enforce a change in the side heading into the second Test.

Best economical pick – Sri Lanka’s best bowler in Durban, Vishwa Fernando picked up eight wickets in two innings in the first Test match. The pacer was comfortable in his zone as he managed to pick up four vital wickets in each innings to dislodge the South African batting attack. Fernando is a bankable option heading into the second Test match and could get you some points.

Top captains & vice captains – If not him, then who? Kushal Perera was undoubtedly the player of the match in the first Test. Not just because of his match-winning knock of 153 in the second innings but also because of the stability that he brings to the Sri Lankan middle-order. Perera is in good touch and even managed to score a half-century in the first innings. South Africa’s only threat in the batting department, Quinton De Kock has matured so much as a batsman. De Kock comes in at number six which makes his position very tricky in Test Cricket. But De Kock has shown exemplary skills and maturity as he is arguably the pick among the Proteas batsmen.

Smart pick – Supporting Quinton De Kock in the middle order was skipper Faf Du Plessis who himself had a decent match. Du Plessis is a level-headed batsman who doesn’t usually get carried away and is a player you can bank on in the second Test match.

Cautions Pick – He has been one of South Africa’s best batsmen with over fifty international hundreds. But Hashim Amla failed once again by scoring 3 and 16 in the two innings in the first Test against Sri Lanka.

My XI – Kushal Perera (Captain), Quinton de Kock (Vice-Captain), Faf Du Plessis, VIshwa Fernado, Aiden Markram, Dale Steyn, Kagiso Rabada, Vernon Philander, Niroshan Dickwella, Kusal Mendis, Dean Elgar
