Chennai vs Delhi on April 10

One of the most successful teams of this competition, Chennai will start their Indian T20 League 2021 campaign on Saturday. For their first match, they will take on Delhi – a team that hasn’t been as successful over the years, but they showed their calibre in the last season. The Delhi side received a huge blow even before the start of the competition, with their captain Shreyas Iyer ruled out for the season with an injury. But they have made additions to fill his void, with Steve Smith likely to play a key role. Chennai have added to their all-round strength by picking up Moeen Ali in the auction.

Best economical pick Marcus Stoinis had played a huge role in Delhi Capitals’ runners-up finish in the previous season of the IPL. He had scored 352 runs at a strike rate of 148.52. He had also been effective with the ball picking up 13 wickets at an average of 21.76. He is a terrific pick as he can contribute with both bat and ball for Delhi.

Top captains & vice captains – Everything Rishabh Pant has touched recently has turned into gold. After showcasing some tremendous performances with the bat in Test cricket, the left-handed batsman continued his form in the recent white-ball series for India. He was seen in devastating form in the ODI series against England where he struck a 40-ball 77 and a 62-ball 78 in the two innings which he played. Given the fact that he will also shoulder the responsibility of Delhi’s captaincy, it seems only obvious for him to set up his game and play with more freedom. If he gets going in the first match, it could be a great sign for Delhi for the rest of the season and considering his recent form, that doesn’t seem too unlikely. Faf du Plessis was just one of the few positives in an otherwise dismal IPL 2020 for CSK. While most of his teammates struggled to score runs consistently, the former South Africa skipper looked class apart. He finished IPL 2020 as CSK’s highest run-scorer, scoring 449 runs in 13 games with the help of 4 fifties. He was the only CSK batsman to touch the 400-run mark last year. Du Plessis will be an integral part of the team once again this year and would be looking to start the season on a high.

Smart pick – Ravindra Jadeja has been out of action since the start of this year. He had fractured his thumb which kept him away from cricket after the Australian tour. But, he will be returning on the field in the first match of this IPL having recovered. Before his injury, the all-rounder was in some good form in both the disciplines, especially batting. He averaged 46 with the bat in the previous season along with a strike rate of 171.85. The Saurashtra player will be upbeat to begin this season with a bang as well.

Cautious Pick – Umesh Yadav hasn’t been the most successful bowler in IPL. His record looks average and is a testament to his mercurial style of bowling. More importantly, he seems to be more suited to the orthodox cricket of longer formats than the more innovative style of T20.

My XI – Rishabh Pant (Captain), Faf du Plessis (Vice-Captain), Ravindra Jadeja, Marcus Stoinis, Suresh Raina, Prithvi Shaw, Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar, R Ashwin, Sam Curran, MS Dhoni
