Sri Lanka vs India on August 12

India now sniff a whitewash as they prepare to take on the hosts in this dead rubber. The third and the final test gets underway from August 12 at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium. Sri Lanka are going through a rough patch in test cricket. In the seven matches they have played this year, they have been able to secure just two wins and that too have come against minnows Bangladesh and Zimbabwe. In the ongoing series, the hosts have struggled in all three departments of the game. India have lost just one test match out of the seven they have played this year and have won four and drawn one of their previous five matches. Most of their wins have been achieved by big margins which shows why they are the no. 1 ranked test team in the world.

·         Best economical pickDimuth Karunaratne’s contribution in the second inning was of equal importance as that of Kusal Mendis’s if not more. While Kusal Mendis played a knock defined by elegant stroke plays. Karunaratne stood as a brick wall in front of the Indians. His knock of 141 runs kept the scoreboard ticking throughout and stabilized the Sri Lankan inning for a long period of time.

·       Top captains & vice captains – Cheteshwar Pujara took it upon himself to do the bulk of the scoring and brought up his 14th Test ton, following the century at Colombo. Together with Rahane, the duo took India to the driving seat with their mammoth partnership of 217 runs. Pujara’s 133 came at a strike rate of 57 and contained 11 boundaries and 1 six. India was precariously placed at 133/3 after Kohli was dismissed and Ajinkya Rahane stitched a vital partnership with Pujara to save the day for India yet again. He brought up a Test ton after a period of 18 innings and 10 Test matches.

·       Smart pick – With wickets falling at regular intervals around him, Sri Lankan limited over opening sensation Niroshan Dickwella, showed the way how to deal with the mighty Indian attack on a difficult pitch. His aggressive approach rattled the Indians somewhat as he scored a lightning 51 off just 48 balls in his typical counter-attacking style.

·         Cautious Pick – Debutant Pushpakumara continued to deliver boundary balls every over to make matters worse for his side. Even though he picked up a couple of wickets in the match, he went for an economy of over 4. He conceded 156 runs of his 38 overs in the first innings.
