Pakistan v Sri Lanka on October 16

·         Pakistan, nursing a 2-0 Test whitewash against Sri Lanka, avenged the defeat by outclassing the tourists with an 83-run win in the ODI opener on Friday. Shoaib Malik´s swashbuckling 61-ball 81 and a return to form 103 by Babar Malik lifted Pakistan to 292-6 in the first ODI in Dubai, before they kept Sri Lanka to 209-8. The match was Pakistan´s first since winning the Champions Trophy in England in June this year. Fast-rising paceman Hasan Ali declared player of the Champions trophy with 13 wickets finished with 3-36 while left-armer Rumman Raees took 3-49 to derail Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, have been at their worst, winning just four ODIs all year and now having lost eight in a row.

·         Best economical pick – Completely out of the blue, Akila Dananjaya joined Vandersay and the duo added a brilliant partnership for the seventh wicket. This came in as a huge surprise for the Pakistani fans as they batted almost for 15 overs. Dananjaya ended up with an unbeaten fifty. He took 1 wicket with his bowling too.

·         Top captains & vice captains – Pakistan were 124/4 in 28 overs when Shoaib Malik walked out to be bat after Sri Lanka invited them to bat first. He shared a 139-run stand in 19 overs along with Babar Azam for the 4th wicket before holing out in the deep off Suranga Lakmal’s bowling. The veteran batsman struck his 40th fifty in ODI cricket as he scored 81 off just 61 balls with the help of five fours and two sixes. With the first off the two sixes in the game, Malik completed 100 sixes in the ODI format. Prior to the commencement of the ODI series, Babar Azam was in the firing range for not having scored runs in the Test series. He rightly announced his comeback to form with a ton in the match. Azam hit a crucial 103 in the match – his 6th ODI ton.

·         Smart pick – Pakistani pacer Hasan Ali turned out to be the pick of the bowlers with figures of 36/3 in 9 overs. It was his spell that turned the game in Pakistan’s favor. He removed Kusal Mendis and Siriwardana in short span of time that kept Sri Lanka at bay.

·       Cautious Pick – Ahmed Shehzad struggled badly against the new ball in the first ODI and was dismissed for a horrendous 12-ball duck. He has been out of form since a long ago. He hasn’t scored a single fifty in his last 11 innings, so pick him in your team at your own risk.

My XI – Shoaib Malik (Captain), Babar Azam (Vice-Captain), Akila Dananjaya, Fakhar Zaman, Niroshan Dickwella, Hasan Ali, Junaid Khan, Upul Tharanga, Rumman Raees, Lahiru Thirimanne, Thisara Perera
