Australia v New Zealand on December 6
· Steve Smith had a day to remember as Australia took a 1-0 lead over New Zealand in their one-day international series, with attention now turning to the nation’s capital and Manuka Oval for the second match. Being a three-match series, every match is now a must-win situation for the tourists, and after their beating on Sunday it had to be asked how they will bounce back. After a strong start, when they removed Aaron Finch in the first over and ran through the Australian top order, the captain stole the show with the bat, scoring one of his more spectacular centuries. Despite the victory, there is plenty to work on for the Australians as attention now turns to Canberra. With many of the New Zealand batsmen stumbling and failing, that can’t be expected again at Manuka Oval, where runs normally come with relative ease.
· Top captains & vice captains – Steve Smith came into the One Day International (ODI) series against New Zealand with question marks arising about his form with the bat and he answered his critics in the best possible way, leading from the front to help Australia beat the Kiwis by 68 runs. Smith scored 164 off just 157 balls in a knock laden with 14 fours and four huge sixes. New Zealand opener Martin Guptill showed some fight in the chase, his 114 runs off 102 balls was his first century against Australia in 40 attempts and while he was there at the crease it looked like the Kiwis had a chance of pulling an upset.
· Best economical pick & Smart pick – Other than Smith, the Australian team management would be chuffed by the performance of Travis Head in the first odi. Travis Head who scored 52, helped Australia post 324 runs off their 50 overs. Chasing 325 to win New Zealand could not keep pace with the run rate and the Australian bowlers led by the returning Josh Hazelwood bowled out New Zealand for 256, 68 runs short of the target.
· Cautions Pick – Maybe one of the most baffling selection decisions for the first Test was New Zealand’s decision to drop Tim Southee from the side, playing two rookie Lockie Ferguson alongside Colin de Grandhomme, Matt Henry and Trent Boult in their pace attack. In another weird twist, de Grandhomme as the side’s fifth bowler only bowled six overs, going at less than five runs per over
My XI – Steve Smith (Captain), Martin Guptill (Vice-Captain),Josh Hazelwood, Travis Head, Colin Munro, Adam Zampa, Matt Henry, Matthew Wade, Mitchell Santner, Kane Williamson, George Bailey
