India vs Sri Lanka on November 24

They were outplayed till the first session of the fourth day, but in a very short period, India turned things around in their favor with ease. They almost managed to script one of the greatest comebacks in cricket history if it hadn’t been for the bad light sabotaging their ambitions. All those who questioned their number one status after a dismal rendition in the first half of the Test match got a fitting reply and Sri Lanka managed to survive a major humiliation. The Lankan Lions were caught in a predicament and for about an hour on the final day, they were left delirious about the result. A healthy 122-run first innings lead wasn’t sufficient for them to hunt the hosts down and with the momentum shifting to the other dressing room, their task will only get difficult in the second Test at Nagpur.

·         Best economical pickSuranga Lakmal grabbed plenty of eyeballs owing to his stellar performance with the red cherry. His bowling was right on the money as he ripped through the Indian batting line-up in their first innings. In his initial spell on the first day, he scalped 3 wickets without spending a run after 6 overs. Firing away consistently at the batsmen on an uncharacteristically bouncy Eden Gardens’ pitch.

·         Top captains & vice captains – Virat Kohli announced himself back in form with a thundering ton in the second innings. His ton set up the tone for the final hours of play in the match as the audiences got engrossed in the game assuming there could be a serious match on the cards. Lokesh Rahul was stunned by Suranga Lakmal’s pace and swing on the very first ball of the Kolkata Test. He had to walk back to the pavilion for a golden duck. He managed to cover up for it in the second innings though. The Karnataka lad scored a well-timed fifty in the second innings to set up a firm base for the Indian total.

·       Smart pick – Under pressure, Niroshan Dickwella struck few lusty blows on the final day and he was pivotal in their historic triumph back in UAE. The Islanders are still struggling to get out of the transition phase and he might be one of the architects of a modern Lankan unit.

·         Cautious Pick – Ajinkya Rahane was the solitary failure in the Indian middle-order in the first Test. The Mumbai lad is experienced enough to bounce back and announce himself back in form in the Nagpur Test. Rahane will be hoping to score big runs and get back in form as soon as possible since the South African tour is around the corner as well.

My XI – Virat Kohli (Captain), L Rahul (Vice-Captain), Suranga Lakmal, Niroshan Dickwella, C Pujara, Mohammed Shami, R Ashwin, Dilruwan Perera, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Murali Vijay, Umesh Yadav
