India vs Sri Lanka on December 10

Team India has the great opportunity to climb to the top of the ICC ODI rankings in the upcoming three-match series against Sri Lanka. The recently concluded Test series was won by the hosts by 1-0 as the final game in Delhi was ended in a draw. However, the series will also mark the international captaincy debut for Rohit Sharma who has previously led Mumbai Indians to a couple of titles in Indian Premier League. Virat Kohli, the regular Indian skipper across formats, has been rested keeping in mind the all-important tour of South Africa in January next year. He will also miss the three-match T20I series which will follow after the One-Day Internationals. If the India whitewash the team from island nation they can trump South Africa in the race to top the ICC ODI rankings. Currently, both the teams are locked at 120 rating points with the Proteas sneaking ahead with the help of decimal points. They can perch to the numero uno position after winning the first ODI on Sunday as well but to sustain at the top, they have to win the remaining two games too.

·         Best economical pick – In the pace bowling department, India will see the comeback of their ace bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Kumar, who was a star performer in the first Test against Sri Lanka, had to miss out on the final two Tests due to personal commitments. Now, he is back to take the field and should be a preferred pick over rookie Siddarth Kaul.

·         Top captains & vice captains – Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma will open the innings for the team. Rohit will have the added responsibility of being the captain. Well, that should not be much of a concern as Rohit has always thrived under the captaincy pressure. Meanwhile, Shikhar Dhawan had also mustered a fifty in the final Test against the islanders. He, too, would want to get some runs under his belt before the bigger tour that awaits a month later.

·       Smart pick – Jasprit Bumrah, who recently received his maiden call-up in the Test team, will be eager to brush up his skills before heading to the South Africa. He has been one of the strong weapons in the Indian death bowling over the last year or so.

·         Cautious Pick – Team India will face difficulties in picking up their middle-order. They will head in to the series without the services of their most consistent batsman, Virat Kohli. Ajinkya Rahane’s string of low scores in the Test series is a cause of concern for the team ahead of the Test series in South Africa. Rahane had accumulated only 17 runs in 5 innings in the recently concluded series.

My XI – Shikhar Dhawan (Captain), Rohit Sharma (Vice-Captain) B Kumar, J Bumrah, Danushka Gunathilaka, Yuzvendra Chahal, Thisara Perera, N Dickwella, Kedar Jadhav, Dhananjaya de Silva, Lahiru Thirimanne
