Sri Lanka vs India on July 6

India lost their first game of the 2019 World Cup when England defeated them by 31 runs at the Edgbaston in Birmingham. However, at the same venue, the Men in Blue got past Bangladesh by 28 runs and became the second team after Australia to qualify for the semis. Now it’s a question of where they would finish in the points table. Their last match is against Sri Lanka on July 6 at the Headingley in Leeds. They have been jolted with a couple of injury blows in Shikhar Dhawan and Vijay Shankar, but that hasn’t been detrimental by any means. The Lankans, on the other hand, took down the Three Lions in Leeds itself and then got the better of the Windies. Nevertheless, the loss at the hands of South Africa literally led to their elimination. The Islanders would want to end the tournament on a positive note.

Best economical pickAvishka Fernando missed quite a few games due to an injury. But he has made a strong comeback after scoring 183 runs in three matches at an average of 61. After scoring 49 and 30, the 21-year-old notched his maiden international century versus the Windies. Fernando is yet to play a match against India and he’ll be keen to make an impact right away.

Top captains & vice captains – Rohit Sharma is currently the leading run-scorer of the tournament with 544 runs at an average of 90.66. Having racked up four centuries and a fifty, he has simply been an unstoppable force. He would be looking for another knock of substance and go into the semis with a good frame of mind. Virat Kohli has scored 408 runs in seven matches at 58.28 to go with five half-centuries. Even as he has shown a great level of consistency, he is still looking for that elusive century. Not often does he misses out on a ton after fifty and he would be a tad dejected. Kohli has eight tons in 46 games at 59.08 versus the Lankans and he has a pretty good understanding of what’s in the store.

Smart pick – Kusal Perera has scored 255 runs in six games at an average of 42.50. The southpaw has gotten those runs at a strike-rate of 109.91, which shows he hasn’t lacked fluency during his knocks. In the last encounter, he scored 64 and is high on confidence He doesn’t have a great record against India, having scored 121 runs, but has every chance of improving on the numbers.

Cautions Pick – Jasprit Bumrah has played every single game thus far in the tournament. He has had a lot of work to do and might need a break. Thus, this is a perfect time to rest him and Ravindra Jadeja is likely to get an opportunity in his place..

My XI – Rohit Sharma (Captain), Virat Kohli (Vice-Captain), Avishka Fernadoo, Kusal Perera, Y Chahal, Mohammed Shami, Lasith Malinga, Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant, Dimuth Karunaratne, Angelo Mathews
