New Zealand vs Bangladesh on February 13

The high-flying New Zealand cricket team are on the right path. After a very disappointing home series loss against India in the ODIs, the Black Caps bounced back strongly to claim the T20I series 2-1. With the World Cup just three months away, every team will be eager to get some momentum. Bangladesh, on the other hand, are coming fresh off their annual domestic league and will be eager to kick off what will be a very busy international season. Bangladesh skipper Mashrafe Mortaza spoke to the media on Sunday where he said that his team is ready for the challenge and will be able to break their drought in New Zealand. Bangladesh face the Black Caps in the 1st ODI at McLean Park in Napier on Wednesday, February 13.

Best economical pick – After being on the receiving end of some good batting by the Indians, Trent Boult had his moment when he took a five-fer in the fourth ODI. Boult at his best is a menace for any batting attack. Although Bangladesh will be wary of the threat that Boult brings to the series, the pacer will still have his moments in the series and hence is a valuable pick.

Top captains & vice captains – One of the most consistent batsmen for the Black Caps in recent times, this series will be the perfect opportunity for Ross Taylor to get into form before the World Cup. Taylor had a quiet series against India and wasn’t effective as much. Taylor would be determined to create an impact in the three-match ODI series. After a blistering century in the final of the Bangladesh Premier League, Tamim Iqbal features in our list over other in-form batters in both the teams. Iqbal’s innings definitely brought back his form and will be the danger man with the bat for the Tigers. While Mushfiqur Rahim is also a smart choice, we had a choice to make between these two and Iqbal’s century last week tilted our picks in his favor.

Smart pick – A player who missed out on the series against India due to injury, James Neesham is back and will fill a big void in New Zealand’s batting attack. Neesham brings depth to the New Zealand batting line-up and can also pick up the occasional wickets when he’s bowling. Neesham could really get into his dangerous best in the series- a sight very worrying for international teams across the world.

Cautions Pick – With only one-half century in the ODI series against India, Kane Williamson wasn’t in the greatest of Knicks. He got starts but unfortunately couldn’t convert them. His indifferent form was also one of the reasons why the Black Caps slumped against India.

My XI – Ross Taylor (Captain), Tamim Iqbal (Vice-Captain), Trent Boult, James Neesham, Lockie Ferguson, Mahmudullah, Mustafizur Rahman, Mushfiqur Rahim, Sabbir Rahman, Todd Astle, Colin de Grandhomme
