Mumbai vs Chennai on September 19

After nearly six months of uncertainty, IPL action comes our way as the Chennai Super Kings take on defending champions Mumbai Indians in the 2020 season opener on Saturday. It is fitting that MI and CSK face each other in the curtain-raiser, especially after the thrill-a-minute ride they had in the IPL 2019 final. Both of them are the most successful teams in the competition, with as many as seven IPL trophies between them. However, things haven't been ideal heading into this edition. Apart from the now-common sight of having no crowds in a bio-bubble, the teams had to work hard to get back to their best despite facing a few glitches on the way. In perhaps the greatest rivalry in the IPL, Mumbai Indians have the upper hand with 18 wins, compared to CSK's 12. With a very well-balanced squad, the Mumbai Indians are slight favourites heading into this game. However, you can never write off MS Dhoni and co, especially at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium where spin is expected to play a massive part.

Best economical pick – In the absence of Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu is expected to play the anchor role by batting at either No. 3 or No. 4. In both positions, he can be expected to notch up healthy scores regularly. Rayudu had a poor IPL last time around, but with all the players coming back from a very long break and two T20 World Cups on the horizon, he will be keen on giving the selectors something to think about.

Top captains & vice captains – De Kock is on the back of an excellent IPL 2019, and has proven to be a revelation in the powerplay for MI. The southpaw can be expected to continue from where he left off last year, and is certain to bag a decent amount of fantasy points in the IPL opener. Kieron Pollard seemed to be in ominous form in the recently concluded Caribbean Premier League, where he took the Trinbago Knight Riders to the title undefeated. Pollard has won many a game for MI over the past few years in the IPL, and his ability to take on the spinners coupled with the unmatched all-round value that he brings to the side make him an excellent prospect.

Smart pick – Rohit Sharma has been in record-breaking form in all three formats for the country over the past year, although he hasn't quite had the same impact on the IPL. Irrespective of that, Rohit is almost certain to register huge fantasy points in IPL.

Cautious Pick – Ruturaj Gaikwad will not be available for selection for the team's opening game, the IPL 2020 tournament opener against Mumbai Indians on September 19. Gaikwad is yet to clear the two mandatory Covid-19 tests put in place by the IPL for him to re-join the squad.

My XI – Quinton De Kock (Captain), Kieron Pollard (Vice-Captain), Rohit Sharma, Ambati Rayudu, Deepak Chahar, Rahul Chahar, Jasprit Bumrah, Kedar Jadhav, MS Dhoni, Suryakumar Yadav, Krunal Pandya
