Sri Lanka vs India on July 26

The 3-match Test series between India and Sri Lanka is scheduled to begin from 26th July. It promises to be a good series because both the teams have pints to prove and starting a new era. While this will be India cricket team’s first series under the new coach Ravi Shastri, Sri Lanka are also going through a transformation phase and Rangana Herath will lead the side for the first time in Test cricket. Sri Lankan fans are hoping for a better performance from their team after a very ordinary show against Zimbabwe. Sri Lanka have not been able to recover after their three great players Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene and Tilakarathne Dilshan announced their retirements from international cricket in quick succession. India, on other hand, are a very well balanced side and doing really well under the able leadership of Virat Kohli. In the grand home season 2016/17, India proved that they are very tough side to beat at home, and conditions in Sri Lanka will not be very different.

·         Best economical pickAsela Gunaratne played what proved to be the match-defining innings in the one off test against Zimbabwe. When Dickwella was on the attack, Gunaratne played second fiddle to him and didn’t try to match him shot for shot. The duo added 121 runs for the 6th wicket in which Gunaratne contributed 50 runs. Gunaratne scored 80 off 151 balls.

·         Top captains & vice captains – Virat Kohli had 2 back to back successful series' with the bat before coming to this series. He was the 3rd highest run getter for India in the Champions trophy and in the West Indies tour Kohli had two failures in the series but managed to score 244 runs in 5 innings at 81.33 with a match winning century. Rangana Herath has climbed to the second position in the ICC Player Rankings for Test Bowlers after grabbing his eighth 10-wicket match haul and helping win the one-off Test against Zimbabwe. The 39-year-old Herath, who is the most successful left-arm spinner in Tests with a tally of 384 wickets in 81 matches, finished with a match haul of 11 for 249 in Colombo to move up a list.

·       Smart pick – Ajinkya Rahane got a chance to play a full series as an opener in the West Indies tour and performed brilliantly. He began well by scoring a solid 62 and went on to post scores of 102, 72, 60 and 39 to finish the series with 336 runs at 67.20.

·         Cautious Pick – Ravindra Jadeja has had poor outings since the ICC Champions Trophy. The same continued in the West Indies tour also as he failed to get a wicket. Jadeja went wicket less and had an economy rate of 3.75 in 2 games.

My XI – Virat Kohli (Captain), R Herath (Vice-Captain), A Gunaratne, A Rahane, R Ashwin, B Kumar, Dilruwan Perera, N Dickwella, L Rahul, Dimuth Karunaratne, Kusal Mendis
