India vs South Africa on June 11

After the first two games in the Group B of the Champions Trophy 2017, one and all would have expected India and South Africa to be the semi-finalist teams and their face off to decide the table topper from the group. But in the two games in the last two days, Pakistan outclassed South Africa while Sri Lanka got the better off the Indian team to spice up the last two games between India-South Africa and Pakistan-Sri Lanka which are now virtual knockout games. With a positive Net Run Rate of 1.272, Indians are currently in the best position in Group B for making it to the semis all India needs is a win against South Africa. South Africa on the other hand, also needs a win to qualify irrespective of the Sri Lanka-Pakistan game. A washout or a tie in this match will help India go through irrespective of the result of the Pakistan vs Sri Lanka game. In the case of a washout or their game ending in a tie, the Proteas will need to hope for a similar result from the Sri Lanka-Pakistan game so that they can go through based on NRR along with India ahead of the Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

·         Best economical pick – It was not the first time when David Miller was once again given the charge to rescue the team’s tottering innings and again, he did the job well. He played an innings of 75* in 104 deliveries and recuperated the South African innings to stretch it to the maximum of the level.

·         Top captains & vice captains – Shikhar Dhawan slammed his 10th century, and third in the ICC Champions Trophy, as he maintained his magnificent form in the clash against Sri Lanka. This was Dhawan’s third century in the ICC Champions Trophy and he is only the fourth player in the history of the tournament to slam three centuries, after Chris Gayle, Herschelle Gibbs and Sourav Ganguly. Rohit Sharma, who scored 91 in the previous game against Pakistan, once again failed to convert his fifty into a hundred. Rohit Sharma was dismissed for 78 off 79 balls with 6 fours and 3 maximums.

·         Smart pick – Morne Morkel, the most experienced bowler in the side was the only bowler to get all the three wickets for the team. He bowled a brilliant spell of 7-1-18-3 but couldn’t see his team doing the job.

·         Cautious Pick – While two quick wickets required a bit of caution, Yuvraj Singh took far too many balls to get himself in. Yuvraj’s 18-ball 7 sucked the momentum out of the chase. He wasn’t going anywhere with his innings and was one of the primary reasons why India could not get 340 on the board.

My XI – Shikhar Dhawan (Captain), Rohit Sharma (Vice-Captain), David Miller, Morne Morkel, Jasprit Bumrah, Kagiso Rabada, Hardik Pandya, Quinton de Kock, Faf du Plessis, Chris Morris, Imran Tahir
