England vs South Africa on July 27

The penultimate Test match between South Africa and England is set to commence on Thursday at the Kennington Oval in London. This is a landmark Test match as The Oval will be hosting its 100 Test match. After winning the first Test at Lord’s, hosts England capitulated against a resurgent Proteas side at Nottingham. South Africa now have all the momentum and should be favored. But having the momentum didn’t do England much good in Nottingham. You could argue that England will regroup and bounce back from that disappointment and will be determined to put things right. But can they really be favorites after losing by 340 runs? Thumping, ultimately one-sided victories have been the story of the series, and of this England team, and of this ground in recent years. Both these teams have talent, but also fragility. Both have folded utterly when placed under pressure.

·         Best economical pickDean Elgar started promisingly in the second innings of second test, hitting Broad for back to back boundaries in his first over. He soon raised his 8th half-century in Test cricket, which was his second in as many Test matches.

·         Top captains & vice captains – He is back, Hashim Amla is back with a bang as the rock that broke the back of England’s seamers in both innings with 78 and 87. Infinite patience in both innings, and in the second instead of mishooking he pulled in front of square. Joe Root batted and Captained well in the second test, Got a bit giddy when the fastest and most brilliant. Test century by an England captain was within reach but could not do much about the out swinging Yorker.

·         Smart pick – It is a well-renowned fact that the partnership of Stuart Broad and James Anderson with the ball will be placed among the likes of Thompson-Lillee. Their performance in the first innings of the match was an exact exhibition of their ability to run through sides in tandem. Stuart Broad picked up three key wickets in the first innings. Broad took the key wickets of Kuhn, Amla.

·         Cautious Pick – Temba Bavuma failed again in 2nd Test. Two more soft dismissals - caught behind when withdrawing his bat and holing out at mid-off - although the second did not matter. For South Africa to win this series he has to step up from apprenticeship

My XI – Hashim Amla (Captain), Joe Root (Vice-Captain), Dean Elgar, Stuart Broad, Vernon Philander, Chris Morris, Quinton de Kock, Keaton Jennings, James Anderson, Heino Kuhn
