India vs Australia on September 21

·         Hardik Pandya and MS Dhoni combined for a splendid 118-run partnership for the sixth wicket to take India out of the rocks. Their contributions propelled India to a competitive total of 281/7 in their quota of 50 overs. Australia who were chasing a revised total of 164 in 21 overs failed to hang in at the crease and never looked in a position to win the game. They lost wickets at regular intervals and struggled to put runs on the board. In the end, India won by 26 runs (D/L method) and managed to gain a 1-0 lead in the series. The Indian team was in fantastic form in the first ODI as far as their bowling performance is concerned. They were right up there and bowled a perfect line and length which unsettled the Aussie batters. However, the Indian batting performance was a bit shaky. There were a lot of talks about playing spin ahead of the game, in the Aussie dressing room, but interestingly, the pacers bagged four wickets while the spinners did one better.

·         Best economical pickBhuvneshwar Kumar scored a crucial 32* with the bat after Hardik provided India with the much-needed momentum. He supported MS Dhoni at the death and himself hit 5 fours. He opened the bowling for the team under pressure as the game was shortened to 21 overs and picked up a wicket of Coulter Nile.

·         Top captains & vice captains – Hardik Pandya finally stood up to his all-rounder tag and played his best 50-over match. He looked confident and started slowly. Suddenly he launched his assault on the leggie Adam Zampa and hit 3 consecutive sixes straight down the ground. He lived by the sword and died by the sword as he gave his wicket to the same bowler but not before scoring a swashbuckling 83 off 65 balls with 5 fours and as many sixes. He was deservedly adjudged the Man of the Match. Glenn Maxwell briefly gave rise to hopes of an unlikely victory when he hit 39 from 18 balls, including three consecutive sixes off left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav, but his dismissal brought a swift end to the match.

·         Smart pick – Indians had no answer to the pace, bounce and movement generated by Nathan Coulter-Nile and Pat Cummins up front so much so that they were reduced to 11-3 by the end of five overs. Coulter-Nile was the architect of destruction for the Aussies as he clinched 3 wickets during the phase.

·         Cautious Pick – Spinner Adam Zampa was taken for a ride by Pandya. Zampa ended his 10 overs conceding 66 runs. He lastly picked up Pandya’s wicket after the batsman attacked him on successive occasions.

My XI – Hardik Pandya (Captain), Glenn Maxwell (Vice-Captain), Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav, Nathan Coulter-Nile, B Kumar, Yuzvendra Chahal, MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, David Warner, Hilton Cartwright
